First Works and the City of Providence teamed up to put on the first annual Providence International Arts Festival this past weekend. The 3-day event boasted 15 stages, 500 artists and over 40 art installations in and around downtown Providence. Among my favorite sites and sounds of the celebration were the public skate park set up in the Dean Hotel parking lot and Angélique Kidjo’s get out your seat and move your feet performance.

Fashion: Backstage at Jonathan Joseph Peters (StyleWeek NorthEast Season 10)

The designer Jonathan Joseph Peters drew inspiration from the Italian Renaissance for his StyleWeek Season 10 show. Holly Dalton glued down and covered the eyebrows of the “Modern Madonnas” to simulate the shaved brows popular with well-to-do Florentine women in the 1500’s. Unlike the nude or peachy lips favored by da Vinci or Raphael in their paintings, models wore a deep wine-colored shade. Betha Wood created elaborate braids using package upon package of Kanekalon. Hair was pulled away from the face to show off the forehead, another Renaissance beauty trick. The finished styles were topped with delicately dangerous headpieces by House of Cach.

Fashion: Backstage at Yellow Clover (StyleWeek NorthEast Season 10)

For the Yellow Clover show, Holly Dalton eschewed the expected black eyeliner for a dazzling blue, giving a modern twist to an old favorite. Keeping with a palette of primary colors, lips were painted a cheery cherry red. Betha Wood pinned and tonged hair into soft bouncy curls to finish off the models’ transformation into technicolor femmes fatales.

Fashion: Backstage at Dylanium Knits (StyleWeek NorthEast Season 10)

The beauty looks for designer Dylan Uscher’s Dylanium show had a neo-futuristic edge. A simple cat-eye and semi-circle of barely there silver eyeshadow decorated the inner half of the lids and corners of the eyes. Holy Dalton completed the look with oil slick black lipstick with a center streak of silver. Betha Wood swept the front and sides back into an ultra-straight faux-undercut for a sleek angrogynous style.

Fashion: Backstage at J. Papa (StyleWeek NorthEast Season 10)

For J Papa’s red carpet worthy black and gold collection, Creative Director of Makeup Holly Dalton imagined a stunningly sexy look that translates well off the runway: sculpted brows, a simple cat-eye with a hint of gold shimmer on the eyelid and along the lower lash line, and a melange of red and berry on the lips for extra depth of color. The sexiness of the makeup was matched by  the hair. Creative Director of Hair Betha Wood created a luscious side-swept look with waves worthy of Veronica Lake.

Fashion: Backstage at Earl Battle (StyleWeek NorthEast Season 10)

For the Earl Battle show, Holly Dalton created the thinnest of cat-eyes, a glossy red lip, with a subtle hint of bronzer on clean luminous skin. The hair, part futuristic, part androgynous, was slicked back into a sleek structured faux-mullet by Betha Wood.

Fashion: Backstage at Eight | United Republic Affair (StyleWeek NorthEast Season 10)

Wide hummingbird-colored cat-eyes and bronzed cheeks paired surprisingly well with the bright colors of Artiss Ankarra’s swimwear collection, EIGHT | United Republic Affair. Creative Director for Makeup Holly Dalton finished off the makeup look with brick-red lips. For her part, Creative Director for Hair Betha Wood constructed a multi-layered style with an intricate chignon in the back, finger waves in the front, all topped off with a lush floral headpiece by Petals & Pearls.
