On Assignment: Maternity Shoot with Saron and Evert

Sometimes clients agonize about wardrobe. Will they have enough pieces the fill out an entire shoot? And sometimes a client will bring just one signature piece. When that piece is a perfectly form fitting little black dress, one can be all you need. [Read more…]

On Assignment: Mother Daughter Shoot with Barbara and Natalie

I find mother daughter shoots to have the most intriguing possibilities. The relationship can be so deep and complex, the emotions intense and ranging from pride to happiness even to longing. Or in the case of Natalie and her mother Barbara, it can be magic. [Read more…]

Introducing the Hollywood Sessions: Get Ready For Your Closeup

Get ready for your closeup.

I have to admit that I tend to be a solitary shooter. I like to work alone. I enjoy the quiet that makes it easy to slip into the zone and give my client(s) my full attention. But as such things often go, the moment you’ve resigned yourself to being a lone wolf, you find collaborators who elevate your work without derailing your process.

This past January, I started a fruitful collaboration with Lulu Locks and her team at Suite Tart to bring old style Hollywood glamour to her vintage photography brand, Providence Pinup. They bring their top-notch hair, makeup and wardrobe styling expertise and I bring the technical chops in lighting, posing, and retouching. It’s a marriage made in Hollywood heaven.

On Assignment: Dr. Sam Lester, RIVMA’s 2015 President, and Parrot

Sam Lester, DVMSam Lester, DVM, with parrot. Photographed at Coventry Animal Hospital.

For the third year running, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph the newest president of the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association (RIVMA). Perhaps the best thing about photographing veterinarians is that you can legitimately and with no intended irony ask them to pose with a parrot on their shoulder.

On the eve of Governor Gina Raimondo’s inauguration, I wanted to post images from a 2014 Les Gamines photoshoot at the Rhode Island State House. The idea behind this fashion story originated with stylist Olivia Rodrigues who wanted to play with and explore clothing options for female leaders and politicians. Style inspirations ranged from First Ladies (Michelle O and Jackie O, among others) for Olivia to mainly international leaders such as French Politician Ségolène Royal and Argentinian President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner for me.

We deliberately steered clear of pant suits and the traditional red, white and blue color scheme favored by American politicians. We also stayed away from the de rigeur shoulder skimming bob and went for a more classically chic length. Tired of monochromatic solids – which we realize work better on television, we played with patterns, prints, and textures. All in all, we sought a loosening of the expected style of political power-dressing. As a result, our lovely model Naira Zakaryan (The Beauty Within) looks more like Queen Rania of Jordan or Angelina Jolie at Davos than any American politician or government official, save perhaps Condoleeza Rice. That’s just fine by us. [Read more…]

On Assignment: Marsala, Lace and Sparkles at Alliance Security’s Holiday Party

Though my personal aesthetic these days is schlumpy chic (if I can’t walk 3 miles in it, what’s the point, really?), I do love when others make an effort and go all out. I like looking at pretty things much more than I want to endure the discomfort of wearing pretty things. So when the guests began arriving for Alliance Security’s 2014 Holiday Party, I was delighted. Wine colored dresses, sparkles, feathers, cutouts, lace, and even a faux(?) fur stole could be seen in the Omni Hotel’s Narragansett Ballroom. While I normally post select photos from events I cover on the blog, with New Year’s Eve fast approaching, I figured why not embrace the spirit with a theme. Here are four fun fashion trends I noticed at the party to inspire you for tomorrow’s festivities.
